Week 15

This week we had an appointment with the OB nurse where we got questioned about every single disease in our families.  The nurse had a lot of information that we have to go through the next couple of weeks.  What surprised me is that she basically told us to throw our book "What to expect when you are expecting" in the trash.  I find it very helpful particularly so I'm surprised she said that.

We also had Andrew's 2 year old birthday party.  It was great fun and also exhausting!!  2 is a very fun age, he's repeating everything we say.

In other news I also passed my Professional Engineering Certification so I'm ecstatic about that!

So, what is the baby up to this week?  The baby is growing at an amazing rate. The baby can be up to 4 inches (10 cm) and weighs 2 to 3 ounces (70 grams).  The baby's hair will start appearing on the scalp and eyebrows.  The baby's skin is developing and is now a thin layer.  And now the baby can wiggle fingers and toes and make a fist!

Let the nesting begin

So I'm starting to feel the need to get the house ready for the baby.  I'm just throwing ideas around at this time, and of course the first goal is to get the room ready.  The baby crib bedding is very cute these days.  Here are my two finalists, Thomas liked the boy theme, but he was speechless with the girl theme ;) I think that was too much purple for him...

And the boy's...

Video - Ultrasound #2

They gave us a video of the ultrasound this time.  It's 10 minutes long.  At the beginning the nurse was just trying to find her and trying to wake her up - that's why you see a little bit of shaking.  But further along you can she where the baby wakes up and stretches and moves around like a jelly bean :)

Week 13 - The baby moves! but I can't feel her yet

We went to our second doctor visit today and we had a long ultrasound session.  The baby seemed to be sleepy at first, and she was facing us.  We could hear the heart again, a healthy 163.  As you can see in the pictures below, the eyes are well defined and the brain is still developing - still split in two.  You can see the little wiggly line above is the umbilical cord.

But the nurse needed her to roll over and see her profile for some measurements.  Thomas started talking to her telling her to roll over and that woke her up.  She started moving so much!  We saw a big stretch and the hands and feet going everywhere.  It was very neat.  I cannot feel the baby inside me yet, I guess it's too little still.  We got a video and we'll try to upload to youtube.  I will send out the link when we figure it all out.

This weekend I was pretty tired again, maybe it was just the weather, rainy and even with some snow! I think Friday evening I was in bed by 8! and Saturday I did not make it past the first quarter of the UT - Nebraska game (7pm).  During the week it's ok.  Things are going well with my new job though I'm still tied to my old job and basically doing both until they hire someone.  I like being busy though.

And the holiday parties are starting all around us with the first one tonight.  My mom is in Texas now, visiting with Andrew and Ruth and Todd.  We will visit Austin next weekend and celebrate Andrew's birthday #2.

Week 11 - Thanksgiving

We are so ecstatic about Thanksgiving coming up!!  Our friends Karen, Dirk and my brother Manuel will be the first ones to arrive today here in a few hours, followed later by Ruth, Todd, Darlene, Andrew, Enrique, Felecia, and my in-laws.  Thomas and I have been getting the house ready and trying to organize our cooking plans for Thursday.

We have short days at work today so we can go home and start cooking whatever we can ahead of time.  Thomas got the turkeys ready last night, he will fry two of them for dinner.

The baby is doing excellent, no complaints from mom :)  By this week, all the organs are in place.  She will start the growing phase now.  From now to 20 weeks she will increase her weight by 30% and up to triple her length.  Some sites say that she is already kicking and moving her arms, but of course they are too small for me to feel.

By the way, according to most predictions and wife tales we are having a boy ;)  Who knows I guess.  A healthy baby is all we really ask for.

I have got the same advice from quite a few friends:  walk every day.  My friends who did this had a labor of about 5 or 6 hours total and that sounds good to me!  A few friends and I work out pretty regularly as it is, so I'll just have to make sure to take Reese out for a jog on those days where I don't.

Week 10 - Not many changes

Week 10... time is flying by!  Almost done with the first trimester.  Being pregnant has been really easy for me so far.  Some days, I even forget when I wake up because life has not really changed for me other than maybe not going out so much and the bathroom thing :)  Thank God I have had no morning sickness at all and I really haven't gained that much weight so things are pretty much the way they were before the baby.  I got some maternity clothes but mine still fit.  Some mood swings but I don't think anything out of the ordinary, Thomas may think differently however he, he, he.

I'm not that tired anymore, this weekend we got around lots of projects with fewer naps in between.  We are getting ready for the visits in Thanksgiving and we are really excited about the holidays.  Ruth, Andrew, Todd, Manuel, Karen, Dirk, my in-laws, Enrique, and Felecia will come over for Thanksgiving.  I'm dieing to see my little nephew, it's been too long, like 3 weeks!

So what's the baby up to this week?  Sofia John (I'm even starting to like that name) is a fetus now.  Measuring at around 2.5 cm (1 inch), the size of a prune (ciruela pasa).  All the vital organs are formed and they will start working.  The teeth buds and eyelids are developing further.  Fingers and toes are being finalized, including nails and some peach fuzz hair.  The baby's limbs can bend and we should be able to see the bone structure clearly in the next ultrasound, which is on December 8th.  One amazing fact I read is that the brain development has really kicked in gear now, and every minute about 250,000 brain cells are produced... wow!

First Picture

We had our first doctor's visit yesterday and we got to see our baby for the first time.  It was beyond great!  I can't even explain how special it was.  Sofia John (as we call her right now :), to cover both he he) is very healthy and has a strong heartbeat.

We were right on the money, the baby is now 8 weeks and 4 days so we are well into week 9.  The due date is June 19, right on time for father's day next year so Thomas could not be happier.  It's 1.9 centimetres long (3/4 of an inch) .

A few of you have said that you're having problems making comments on this page.  I changed some settings so hopefully it's a little easier now.  Give it a try.

Cravings are wonderful!

Specially when you get exactly what you want!

I have to give kudos to Thomas for the awesome meal last night!  I told him over messenger that I was craving those crab ravioli we had in Rome and little did I know, he took off work early to make them from scratch!!

This kiddo does not wait, when I feel hungry, I feel almost like she's pulling on the umbilical cord he, he, he.  Because by the way, I now refer to the baby as 'she' and Thomas refers to it as "he"... we'll see who's right he,he ;)

So thanks Thomas, you really are making this pregnancy easy going :)

Week 8 and the flu!

This past week was pretty rough.  I got the flu and had to stay home for a couple of days.  Every muscle in my body ached, I thought I had just played too much with Andrew last weekend but after a friend called, she thought it sounded like the flu and said I should go get swab tested.  So I did and it came out positive.  They gave me a couple of days off work and some medication.  I stayed home but didn't take anything, it did not seem all that safe for the baby being this small.  So I just slept it off.  By Thursday I was still feeling pretty bad but had to go into work for a few hours.  Friday same thing, and I had to give a presentation to the City that afternoon.  In the evening, Thomas and I helped out with Scary tales on the trail for the children in Victoria.  And then went home.  We missed a few Halloween parties for the first time in many years but oh well :)

This is another busy week for the baby, this week it will measure up to half an inch, about the size of a lima bean (haba en espannol).  The baby is developing fingers and toes now.  I have a doctor's appointment next week so hopefully they will do an ultrasound and I can see her/him for the first time :)

7 weeks!

Baby Development at 7 Weeks Pregnant
http://similac.com/pregnancy/7-weeks-pregnant-baby-growth-development

The baby is taking more shape now.  It's almost a centimetre long!  About the size of a blueberry.  I've been exhausted lately but thank God my test is now over and I'll have more time in the evenings to relax!

We went to Austin this weekend and I played with Andrew non-stop so I was pretty tired just from that.  He's the sweetest thing though!  We went to a pumpkin patch, daycare fair, and carved our pumpkins.  He also gave me a hand in the garden planting a few pansies for the fall. Our friends Dawn and Shane and their little ones visited and we had a good time.  Thomas and Todd painted the room for Ruth's new baby and it looks fantastic!  Ruth is doing better, but still a little swollen around her feet.

I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that I'm making a baby :)  I'm thankful I don't have morning sickness but the heartburn has been bad.  I constantly feel like there is a fire in my throat!  I believe I can take some Tums but haven't asked the doctor yet, I will give Mary Ann a call later to ask :)

First Weekend

Starting week 6...

For my friends out of the country who are not familiar how Americans count the weeks in pregnancy, there are a total of 40 weeks until the baby is due.  Day one is the first day of the last period so not necessarily the age of the baby, but somewhere around a couple to three weeks before the baby was conceived.  I'm thinking the due date is June 23.

My first pregnant weekend just went by and all I did was rest a lot!  I'm very tired!  I am studying for an exam and I had a hard time reading more than a few pages at a time without a nap in between!

Our baby is now the size of a grain of rice.  He/she is growing so fast!  I got this picture from a website below, that's sort of what it looks like for now.  Taking shape :)  Thomas brought me a grain of rice while I was studying and it really put things in perspective.  How tiny!

This week the baby's nervous system, heart, kidneys, liver and lungs will start forming.  The shape will also start unveiling as jaw, cheeks, chin, ear canals, nose and eyes start to form around this week.

His/her heart should also be beating now.

We found out

We found out we are pregnant and these last few days have been nothing but full of joy spreading the news to our friends and family.  Everyone is so happy for us and we really thank all of you for all the support!

So how am I feeling?  Let's see, tired for one.  I dozed off at 7pm last night and only got up to go to my bed and slept right through to 6am!  I am a little emotional, I cried when I read an email of congratulations today he, he.  I have a few aches but nothing bad really.  I am a little worried to about eating the right things and hoping I have not done anything to make things bad for the baby.  I guess I'm just a rookie! hehehe.

I have to go get some blood work done later today and we'll get our first doctor appointment soon after that!
